알프레드 마샬의 Principles of Economics는 여러면에서 맬더스의 “Principles of political economy”의 이론위에서 움직이고 있다. 주목할만한 것은 인구가 한 곳에서 다른 곳으로 이동하고 사회에서 인구가 늘어나고 하는 과정에서, 사회경제적 필요들에 대해 잘 설명하고 있다는 점이다. BOOK IV, CHAPTER V 를 보니 이런 대목이 나온다: After food, the next necessaries of life and labour are clothing, house-room and firing. When they are deficient, the mind becomes torpid, and ultimately the physical constitution is undermined. [...] Next come three closely allied conditions of vigour, namely, hopefulness, freedom, and change. 어떻게 보면 매슬로의 욕구위계 같은 발상인데, 재미난 대목은 희망, 자유, 변화가 같은 단계에 있다는 점이다… 오바마의 등장은 이런 inefficiency 에 대한 갈망이 아닐까?
