어느 곤조 (gonzo) 저널리스트의 자살
어제 미국에서 저널리즘과 관련된 일로 밥먹고 사는 대부분의 블로거들은 곤조 저널리즘 (gonzo journalism)의 선구자 헌터 탐슨(Hunter Thompson)에 대한 추도의 글을 올렸다. 이른바 1인칭 화자의 주관적 눈으로 사건을 기록하는 곤조 저널리즘의 진수를 맛볼 수 있는 글을 역시 워싱턴 포스트의 뛰어난 저널리스트인 Joel Achenbach가 전해준다.
1974년 닉슨이 백악관을 떠나는 날을 기록하는 헌터 탐슨의 글이다.
"....I eased through the crowd of photographers and walked out, looking back at the White House, where Nixon was giving his final address to a shocked crowd of White House staffers. I examined the aircraft very closely, and I was just about to climb into it when I heard a loud rumbling behind me; I turned around just in time to see Richard and Pat coming toward me, trailing their daughters and followed closely by Gerald Ford and Betty. Their faces were grim and they were walking very slowly; Nixon had a glazed smile on his face, not looking at anybody around him, and walked like a wooden Indian full of Thorazine. His face was a greasy death mask. I stepped back out of the way and nodded hello but he didn't seem to recognize me..."
롤링스톤지에 실린 이 기사는 기자가 현장에서 직접 눈으로 확인하면서 "나는..." 이라는 당시로서는 파격적인 1인칭 화자의 눈으로 그리고 닉슨을 아주 혐오하는 한 명의 기자의 눈으로 이 이벤트에 대한 에피소딕 기억을 남긴 것이다. 뉴욕타임스는 그가 미국 문화와 저널리즘에 남긴 업적을 이렇게 평가하고 있다.
He went on to become a counter cultural hero with books and articles that skewered America's hypocrisy.
저널리즘에서 강조하는 객관성과 중립성이라는게 결국은 허구, 신화, 혹은 위선이 될 수 밖에 없다고 주장하는 나로서는 헌터 탐슨이 남긴 이른바 곤조 저널리즘(gonzo journalism)이야말로 오늘 우리가 기록하는 blogism과 가장 잘 맞아 떨어진다고 본다. 다만 헌터처럼 직접 사건의 현장에 들어가서 마약등을 해가면서 소설과 기사의 경계를 왔다갔다하는 대신, 오늘날 블로거들은 하이퍼링크를 타고 들어가 다른 블로거들의 삶의 조각들과 기억의 편린들을 참여관찰한 후 이를 바탕으로 다시 "나는"으로 시작하는 주관적인 기억을 남기는 곤조 저널리즘에 참여하는 셈이다.
